Shasta's out of two very large and bold alpacas and she shows it. At HaSu, we select for size, and Shasta certainly fits the bill. She's our tallest girl and has terrific bone and conformation, making her an ideal breeder and birther. Her first cria Shamokin, weighed in at 20 pounds when he was born. Shasta's a great milker, which is evidenced in her cria's advanced growth rate and early weaning age. And as testament to that, she is one of the rare
alpacas to have living twins. Not only did they survive, but she
delivered them without assistance, and nursed them without
supplementation.
Shasta has a true black fleece with a nice handle. And it is bright and consistent with good staple length. Her pedigree features only dark alpacas-- all black on her sire's side and black and silver grey on her dam's side. Her sire, Acero Marka's Bernard, is a proven producer of award-winning cria, including the acclaimed True Black Vesuvias.
For more information on the quality of Shasta's cria, look at Shamokin in our male huacaya section. He has a beautifully fine bright crimpy light fawn fleece. He is a large and perfectly conformed and has done very well in both the halter class and fleece competitions. Shasta's 4th cria, out of our studmaster Heminway son, LTD Mohican, is a beautiful bay black boy who wowed us all by taking 3rd at the highly competitive MAPACA show (the largest in the world) and followed that up with a 2nd at the AOBA Nationals.
Shasta's last cria, a beige male out of our MSA Peruvian Cannonero is just one more example of Shasta's ability to produce top quality. This male, Cannonero's Venango, carries an exquisitely fine fleece that features a tight, high frequency crimp from skin to the tip, all organized in individual bundles across his entire body. At his very first show he won 3rd at the '08 MAPACA show in a very tough class beating animals from some of the best breeding programs in the country.
Because we were so impressed with the results of Shasta's last pairing with Cannonero, we have repeated it for a Spring 2009 baby.
